Paul Brown revolutionized professional football, introducing groundbreaking innovations like film study and play-calling radios while forging a championship dynasty in Cleveland.
PAUL BROWN
Football Bio
September 7, 1908 – Paul Brown, the legendary first head coach of the Cleveland Browns, was born.
Brown started coaching the Browns in 1946, when they had their inaugural season in the All-America Football Conference. That was Brown’s first professional coaching job, as his prior experience came at the high school level and with some military teams.
Paul Brown was an innovator and helped shape coaching as we know it today. The concepts of hiring a full-time, year-round coaching staff and hiring scouts to evaluate college talent are two of the ideas Brown introduced.
He also introduced film study for his players and had them study in classroom settings as well as study the game Film themselves. He sent plays into the huddle by shuffling guards in and out and was also the first to try a radio transmitter in the quarterbacks’ helmets to call plays.
His career coaching record in the AFC and NFL was a whopping 167 wins, 53 losses, and eight ties, and he had all but one losing season in 17 years at the helm of the Browns. Paul Brown’s teams won four AFC titles and three NFL championships.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined this great innovator in the class of 1967. He was inducted into the Hall.
The AFL authorized Brown to start a team in Cincinnati, and he called them the Bengals in homage to other teams that had played there. Previously, Brown was not only the Bengals’ owner and GM, but he was also their head coach to this day; the Brown family still owns the Bengals in the NFL. [Pro Football HOF]
According to our guest George Bozeka (PFRA President), Paul Brown is the only person who was the head coach of a National championship team at the high School (Massillon), College (Ohio State), and Professional (Cleveland Browns AAFC & NFL) levels of football.
Paul Brown forever changed the trajectory of professional football, leaving behind an unmatched legacy of coaching ingenuity, multiple professional championships, and two historic NFL franchises.
