John Mackey: Star Colts Tight End

College Career

John Mackey was a two-sport star at Syracuse University, playing both football and basketball. He was a dominant force on the gridiron and a key two-way player for the Orange. As a senior in 1962, he was a key part of an explosive offense and earned first-team All-American honors. His blend of size, speed, and receiving skills foreshadowed the modern tight end, a role he would help invent in the professional ranks.

Road to the Pro Game

The Baltimore Colts selected John with the second pick of the 1963 NFL Draft. Mackey played for the Colts for nine years, then spent one final NFL season with the San Diego Chargers. John helped redefine the tight end position from just another blocking lineman to an additional speedy deep threat.

His performance in the 1966 season showed he could loosen defenses, as he scored 6 of his nine touchdowns on passes longer than 50 yards! 

Football Legacy

John Mackey’s legacy extends far beyond his on-field performance. As a player, he redefined the tight end position, becoming the prototype for modern players with his speed and ability to stretch the field. He was also a fierce advocate for player rights, serving as the first president of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and helping to win landmark free agency rights for players. The John Mackey Award honors his enduring influence, presented annually to the most outstanding tight end in college football.
