“We thought we could work on their defensive backs. We thought we could beat them man to man and it turned out that way. It was our game plan to throw a lot to the receiver on the weaks ide.” ~ Max McGee after his two touchdown performance in Super Bowl I, in what he said was his final NFL game.
“Sayonara! It’s a great one to quit on and I quit.”

McGee returned and played one more season for the Packers in 1967, helping them win another title in Super Bowl II over Dallas. In Super Bowl I, the Packers dominated the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs in a lopsided 35-10 rout.
Multiple reports say the 34-year-old Green Bay Packers wide receiver, Max McGee, partied all night before the big game and got severely hungover because he didn’t expect to play. He even forgot his helmet and had to borrow someone else’s, so he could enter the contest. But, after starting receiver Boyd Dowler got injured, the foggy McGee came in to score the first touchdown in Super Bowl history (a one-handed catch from Bart Starr), finishing with 7 catches, 138 yards, and 2 touchdowns in a dominant performance.
