Dick LeBeau transformed the modern NFL defense with his innovative Zone Blitz scheme after building a Hall of Fame playing career as a ball-hawking cornerback for the Detroit Lions.

Football Bio

September 9, 1937 – Dick LeBeau, a two-way back from Ohio State University, was born. LeBeau became a 1959 NFL fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns; however, the Browns cut him in his rookie season, and the Detroit Lions quickly picked up the 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback.

What a pickup the Waver Wires he was, as Dick played for 14 seasons and made the Pro Bowl three times.

LeBeau had a streak of 12 consecutive seasons of picking off at least three interceptions, and Dick LeBeau had 62 career picks for 762 return yards and three touchdowns.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined him in their class of 2010.

Dick went into coaching and spent well over 40 years in the NFL’s coaching ranks, and he was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals at one time, and was famously the defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he helped author the Zone Blitz scheme.

Dick LeBeau etched his name into professional football history twice—first as a legendary playmaker in the secondary and then as a brilliant mastermind on the sidelines. He revolutionized how modern defenses attack the quarterback, leaving an unmatched defensive legacy across the league.

• Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
• Recorded 62 career interceptions (tied for 11th on the all-time NFL list).

• Named Second-team All-Pro three times (1964, 1965, 1970).
