September 1, 1951 – Brian Kelley, a former linebacker for California Lutheran University, was born.

As a junior at Cal Lutheran, Brian helped the team win the NAIA national championship game in 1971.

In 2010, the College Football Hall of Fame’s selection committee announced his enshrinement into their museum. [National Football Foundation]

The Giants selected Kelley in the 14th round of the 1973 NFL Draft—an incredible steal for a franchise that would rely on him for over a decade. While Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson often grab the historical spotlight, Kelley’s consistent, heavy-hitting presence over 11 seasons laid the vital groundwork that allowed the “Crunch Bunch” to become one of the most terrifying defensive units of the era.

Brian Kelley carved out a brutal, hard-hitting legacy at both the collegiate and professional levels, cementing his name among the greatest defensive players in football history.
