October 11, 1905 – Joel Hunt was a former Texas A&M halfback who played from 1925 through the 1927 season.ย  Joel was all-Southwest Conference all three years he was in college.

The National Football Foundation states that Joel scored 30 TDs in 27 games played in college, and that his team at A&M had a record of 20-4-3 while he was with the team. After graduation, Joel went into coaching, serving many schools in one form or another, and then moved into the professional coaching ranks with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Colts. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted Joel Hunt in 1967.

Position Versatility: Though listed as a halfback, Hunt truly played the position of a quarterback (in the historical sense) for Texas A&M. He was a quintessential “iron man” who ran, passed, punted, place-kicked, and played defense.

The Heisman Seal of Approval: Legendary coach John Heisman, who coached against Hunt’s teams at Rice University, called him “the greatest all-around player I ever saw.”

Conference Success: Hunt led the Texas A&M Aggies to Southwest Conference Championships in both 1925 and 1927.

Record Setter: His 30 touchdowns scored in 27 college games set a school record that stood for 63 years (until 1990). Furthermore, his 224 total points scored set an A&M record that stood for 51 years (until 1978).

Dominant Game: In a famous 1927 victory over Southern Methodist (SMU), Hunt scored three touchdowns, averaged 40 yards on punts, and recorded a stunning four interceptions in a single game.

Head Coaching: In addition to his NFL assistant roles with the Bills and Colts, Hunt served as the Head Football Coach at the University of Georgia (1938) and the University of Wyoming (1939).

Military and Baseball: Hunt served in the Army Air Corps from 1949โ€“1952, rising to the rank of Captain. He also played professional baseball, making it to the majors for 16 games with the St. Louis Cardinals (1931-1932).
