The 1937 College Football Season History Rewind
The 1937 college football season unfolded like a classic gridiron thriller, each play a nail-biter, each game a potential upset. Picture this: leather helmets gleaming under stadium lights, the rhythmic thud of boots on grass, and the roar of the crowd as a halfback dives across the goal line.
It was a year of contrasting styles. West Coast marvels like California wowed with their aerial attack, led by Heisman Trophy winner Clint Frank, while powerhouse teams like Pittsburgh relied on a punishing ground game and granite-hard defense.
The season saw historic moments:
Unbeaten Battles: Both California and Pittsburgh finished the season undefeated, each claiming a mythical national championship (the AP Poll was still new!).
Rose Bowl Heartbreak: Despite going 9-0-1, Pittsburgh missed the coveted Rose Bowl due to a scheduling quirk, leaving fans and experts scratching their heads.
Lonesome LSU: The Tigers, led by the legendary Doc Fenton, dominated the South but remained largely ignored by national media, a testament to the regional focus of the time.
But beyond the stats and scores, 1937 marked a turning point. It showcased the growing popularity of the sport, the evolution of offensive strategies, and the fierce competition that would define college football for generations to come. It was a season etched in gridiron lore, a reminder that even without a definitive champion, the memories made on the field are what truly crown the victors.
So, join us as we delve deeper into this forgotten chapter of college football history, reliving the triumphs, the heartaches, and the enduring legacy of the 1937 season.

The 1936 College Football Season History Rewind
1936 college football crackled with newfound excitement. It was the birth of the AP Poll, crowning Minnesota with the inaugural title as writers traded telegrams and ranked America's gridiron titans. Santa Clara, a West Coast Cinderella, danced on the national stage, upsetting giants and claiming their own championship crown. Meanwhile, legends like Larry Kelley at Yale carved their names in Heisman history with dazzling displays of athleticism. But the season wasn't all sunshine and confetti. Controversies swirled as rival polls disagreed, champions debated, and the fight for legitimacy in a fragmented football landscape continued. It was a year of firsts, upsets, and fierce competition, forever etching itself in the college football tapestry as the dawn of a new era.
College Football’s Only Triangular Game
Andy Kerr was a football outsider whose innovations led to strong teams at several schools, though he is best known for his success at Colgate. Kerr did not play college football but was Pitt’s track coach when Pop Warner arrived, with Kerr assisting Warner. Warner signed a contract to coach Stanford in 1922, but Pitt would not release him from his existing contract, so he sent Kerr to Palo Alto to be the head coach for two years until Warner’s contract ran out. — www.footballarchaeology.com
Timothy P. Brown bings us a tidbit of information of Coach Andy Kerr playing in what may be the first triangular game while acting as the headman at Colgate.
Georgia Bulldogs First Ever Football Game Was Played
The University of Georgia played its first football game in Athens against Mercer University on January 30, 1892. According to an interesting post on the UGA.edu website, the Bulldogs started their first gridiron campaign with Chemistry Professor Dr. Charles Holmes Herty, organized not on Georgia’s first football team but the first in the deep south of America.
In this first game, the Bulldogs hammered Mercer 50-0. Their schedule for that first season consisted of only one other game, which took place on February 20 against Auburn.
An exciting story that comes from the article tells that in this first game on the athletics fields (now known as Herty Field), some reports indicate that the official scorer for the game missed at least one touchdown when he walked to the city alcohol dispensary on Broad St. across from the campus to purchase a bottle of whiskey during the game. With a 50-point differential, the players from Mercer may have wished they had joined him!
A college football team's first game is a birth certificate and a blank canvas. It's the launch of a program's legacy, a chance to unveil its potential on the field. It serves as a rallying point for future generations of fans and a milestone for the university's athletic identity.
