Today, we’re going to talk about a legendary Nittany Lion quarterback. A couple of NFL quarterbacks named Steve and the ladies are here during a game in just a minute.
In this edition, we are going to cover the events of football that happened on September 13 throughout history.
Let’s break the huddle and get right at it. Here is the podcast version:
Big Quarter for Atlanta
On September 13, 1981, the Atlanta Falcons tied a record when they scored 31 points in the fourth quarter against the Green Bay Packers at the start of the final stanza.
The Pack had a 17-point lead at home in the confines of Lambeau Field, but the Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski and company had not given up, even though they had not scored a point all day, due in part to the stifling Packers defense.
The Falcons’ defense became increasingly aggressive with blitz packages that stalled the Green Bay offense, and Barkowski found his top wideout, Alfred Jenkins, with some key strikes to move the Atlanta offense down the field to paydirt. It looked like Green Bay had found its offense again at one point, as they moved the ball with passes from Lynn Dickey to wide receiver James Lofton.
However, a back-breaking fumble by running back Turtle Middleton and the subsequent 57-yard scoop and score by Falcons linebacker Joel Williams kept the game’s momentum with Atlanta, ultimately leading to a final score. 31:17.
Falcons now flip the calendar Pages a few years to September 13, 1987. Quarterback Steve DeBerg set a Tampa Bay Buccaneers record as he connected on five touchdown passes during a game against the Atlanta Falcons in a 48:10 romp by the Bucs over their division rivals. Then we jump into the next decade.
A Giants Rally Falls Short
On September 13, 1992, the New York Giants came close to a late comeback win of their own against the division rival, the Dallas Cowboys. Down 34 to nothing in the third quarter, the G Men put up 28 unanswered points but fell short as the boys stepped up late to hold on to a 34 -28 win.
Next stop on the timeline, Denver, Colorado, September 13, 1999, the Denver Broncos officially retired quarterback John Elway’s number seven jersey.
Now we step into the more recent past, September 13, 2018, Internet giant Amazon livestreams an NFL game with an all-female broadcast team during the Cincinnati Bengals versus Baltimore Ravens contest. The voices of Andrea Kramer and Hannah Storm filled the sound waves to entertain the web-viewing audience.
The Bengals ended up on top 34-23.
