From the executive rooms of the NFL to the dust of early 20th-century Southern gridirons, June 4th holds a massive place in football lore. On this day in 1974, Commissioner Pete Rozelle officially put pen to paper on the agreement that birthed the Seattle Seahawks franchise under the Nordstrom family’s leadership. But decades before the “12th Man” ever made a stadium shake, June 4th also gave us the birth of Bob McWhorter—a Phi Beta Kappa genius who scored 61 touchdowns and became the University of Georgia’s very first All-American.

Before we get to the daily history, let us enjoy some gridiron artwork from 1968.

June 4 American Football History Timeline

  • June 4, 1875 – The Birth of the Crimson Uniform – In an incredibly foundational moment for college football history, Harvard played its first-ever intercollegiate game on June 4, 1875, squaring off against Tufts. While the game itself was a massive milestone, it is equally famous for the Harvard squad taking the field in matching crimson shirts and socks—marking what historians believe is the first time a football team ever wore a designated, cohesive uniform.
  • June 4, 1967: The Cleveland Summit– One of the most culturally significant moments in sports history occurred when Cleveland Browns legend Jim Brown helped organize the “Cleveland Summit.” Brown, along with a who’s who of prominent Black athletes (including Bill Russell, Lew Alcindor/Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Willie Davis), met at the Black Economic Union offices to interview boxer Muhammad Ali and publicly stand behind his refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Military during the Vietnam War.
  • June 4, 1974 – The NFL grants a franchise to a group of Seattle, Washington investors for a team that would become the Seahawks. Commissioner Pete Rozelle announced the signing of the Seattle franchise agreement by Lloyd W. Nordstrom, representing the Nordstrom family as majority partners.

June  Football Hall of Fame Birthdays

Happy Birthday to these gridiron powerhouses! As we look at June 4, we celebrate two men who completely dominated the trenches and the backfields of their respective eras.

Here is the list in order of birth:

  • Bob McWhorter [1891] A brilliant scholar-athlete and Phi Beta Kappa member, McWhorter was a legendary halfback who scored 61 touchdowns for the University of Georgia from 1910 to 1913. A four-time All-Southern selection and 1954 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, he helped establish the Bulldogs as a rising power in Southern football.
  • Jim Lachey [1963] A ferocious blocking force out of Ohio State, Lachey earned consensus All-American honors in 1984 while opening massive holes for nation-leading rusher Keith Byars. He went on to forge a dominant ten-season NFL career, securing three First-team All-Pro selections and anchoring the Washington Redskins’ famous “Hogs” offensive line during their Super Bowl XXVI championship run.

Conclusion

June 4 beautifully bridges the amateur roots of college football with the multi-billion-dollar expansion era of the modern NFL. Bob McWhorter’s journey from a military academy standout to a College Football Hall of Fame halfback reminds us of the raw, historic talent that laid the sport’s foundations. Meanwhile, the official founding of the Seattle Seahawks on this exact date changed the geographic and cultural footprint of pro football forever. These milestones prove that every yard gained today stands on the shoulders of the pioneers who built the game.
