How ‘Bout Them Championships? The Legendary Ride of Jimmy Johnson

By Pigskin Dispatch July 16, 2026 2 min read

Born on July 16, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, James William “Jimmy” Johnson grew up destined to reshape gridiron history. Before building modern pro dynasties, he laid his foundation on the college turf, playing as an All-Southwest Conference nose guard for the 1964 national champion Arkansas Razorbacks.

The College Career

Johnson began his head coaching journey at Oklahoma State (1979–1983) before taking over the University of Miami Hurricanes in 1984. In Coral Gables, he unleashed a fierce, high-flying program defined by swagger and speed. Over five seasons, he went 52-9, orchestrating an undefeated 12-0 season in 1987 to capture the NCAA National Championship. His tenure also initiated Miami’s historic, NCAA-record 58-game home winning streak. (College Football Hall of Fame)

Road to the Pro Game & Pro Teams Played On

In 1989, his former college teammate and new Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, hired him to replace the iconic Tom Landry. While Johnson never played in the pros, his transition to NFL coaching was legendary. He took a dismal 1-15 Cowboys squad and completely revolutionized the roster through masterful draft trades—most notably the historic Herschel Walker trade. In 1992 and 1993, Johnson led Dallas to dominant back-to-back Super Bowl victories in XXVII and XXVIII.

Following a high-profile split with Jones, Johnson returned to the sidelines in 1996, coaching the Miami Dolphins for four seasons. He successfully guided the Dolphins to three playoff appearances before retiring from coaching in 2000.

Football Legacy

Jimmy Johnson’s legacy lives in his blueprint for team building. He prioritized speed over raw size, mastered the psychological edge of “swagger,” and valued draft pick equity far ahead of his time. He remains elite as the first person to win a national college championship as both a player and a coach, and to win a Super Bowl ring.
