Super Bowl XXXVI: The Birth of a Dynasty
February 3, 2002 – Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans – Super Bowl XXXVI provided one of the greatest upsets in NFL history as the 14-point underdog New England Patriots defeated the “Greatest Show on Turf” St. Louis Rams. The Patriots’ defense, orchestrated by Bill Belichick, physically disrupted the Rams’ high-powered offense, leading to a 17-3 New England lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Rams mounted a furious comeback, with Kurt Warner scoring a rushing touchdown and finding Ricky Proehl for the tying score with just 1:30 remaining. With no timeouts and the world expecting the first overtime in Super Bowl history, young quarterback Tom Brady led a clinical 53-yard drive to the St. Louis 30-yard line. Adam Vinatieri then stepped up to nail a 48-yard field goal as time expired, securing a 20-17 victory. Tom Brady was named MVP, launching a dynasty and marking the first time a Super Bowl was won on the game’s final play.
