Now today we're tackling a legend, a name synonymous with Notre Dame and early football innovation, Newt Rodney.

We all know the Win one for the Gipper line, but how much do we really know about the man behind the myth?

Let's dig into some things you probably don't know about the legendary coach Knute Rockne.

First, let's rewind to Rockne's childhood.

Speaker A:

Many picture him as a quintessential American football icon, but he was an immigrant.

Imagine that.

A man who become the face of American football's golden age began his life in the Fords of Norway.

Speaker A:

It's a powerful reminder that the American dream and the sport we love are built on the contributions of people worldwide.

This is an early experience that shaped his determination, drive and characteristics that would define his coaching career.

Speaker A:

After graduating from high school, Rockne worked as a mail dispatcher in the Chicago post office for four years and saved money to enroll at Notre Dame at the age of 22.

Speaker A:

During one summer break, he worked as a lifeguard at Cedar Point Amusement park near Sandusky, Ohio.

Speaker A:

And he was a good football player.

Speaker A:ing in All American honors in:Speaker A:

That same year, the Irish started the tradition of playing army, upsetting the cadets at West Point 35 13.

Speaker A:

A week later, Notre Dame had his first game against Penn State and Rockne caught the first touchdown pass in the rivalry.

Now most people know Rockne for his legendary coaching tenure at Notre Dame.

Speaker A:

But did you know he Played professional football.

Speaker A:

That's right.

Speaker A:

After his playing days at Notre Dame, where he famously helped popularize the forward pass with Gus Dorius, Rockney didn't hang up his cleats entirely.

Speaker A:

During the early days of pro football, he played for a few professional teams, including the Massin Tigers and some other local teams in around the Ohio area.

Speaker A:

Now, this experience gave him a unique perspective on a game which he carried into his coaching.

He understood the nuances of professional play, grit and strategy, and undoubtedly contributed to his innovative coaching style.

He saw football from every angle.

As a coach, Newt was impressive.

Now, those are all pretty well known facts that we've talked about so far with Newt Rockne.

But perhaps the most surprising fact that you might not know is his coaching tree extended far beyond the college ranks.

Now, he had plenty of players that he coached that went into the profession, the coaching of college football, but he had a profound influence on the early days of the NFL.

Many NFL coaches in the league's formative years were former Rockne players.

Newt Rockne's influence on the NFL extended far beyond the sidelines of Notre Dame.
