College Career

Young attended the University of Notre Dame, where he played for the Fighting Irish from 1990 to 1993. A dominant force on the interior line, he earned four monograms and helped lead the team to a remarkable 40-8-1 record during his tenure. As a senior captain in 1993, Young was named a First-Team All-American, recording 6.7 tackles per game and 6.5 sacks. He finished his collegiate career with 176 tackles and 18 sacks, graduating with a degree in marketing before heading to the professional ranks.+3

The San Francisco 49ers selected Young with the 7th overall pick in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact, earning the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award and helping the 49ers win Super Bowl XXIX in his first season. Young spent his entire 14-year professional career (1994–2007) with San Francisco, becoming the “heart and soul” of the franchise.
