On January 17, 1999, the Minnesota Vikings suffered a heartbreaking 30–27 overtime loss to the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. Despite entering the game as heavy favorites following a historic 15–1 regular season, the Vikings’ lead slipped away after kicker Gary Anderson missed a late 38-yard field goal—his first and only miss of the entire season. The Falcons capitalized on the error to tie the game in the final minute and eventually secured their first Super Bowl berth with a game-winning kick by Morten Andersen in the extra period.
