When we flip back a century to today’s date in the fishwraps across America and look for football articles, an interesting one appears in the October 21, 1926, Indianapolis Times. A group calling itself the Hoosier Motor Club provided the best routes for traveling fans to reach the local game of their choice.
In the mid-1920s, driving to an out-of-town football game was part sporting pilgrimage, part off-road expedition. At the same time, Indianapolis sat proudly as the “Crossroads of America,” and central Indiana’s road network was caught in a chaotic transition from the dirt-and-gravel horse-and-buggy era to the modern automobile age. Paved concrete highways like the National Road and the Dixie Highway radiated outward from the city center, but straying just a few miles beyond primary corridors meant contending with rutted macadam, loose gravel, or deep autumn mud that could swallow a Ford Model T up to its axles after a heavy rain.
Adding to the confusion, the autumn of 1926 was a flashpoint of navigational disruption: just three weeks prior, on October 1, the Indiana State Highway Commission launched the “Great Renumbering,” overhauling the state’s patchwork auto trail system to align with the newly standardized U.S. Numbered Highway System. Signage was either missing, temporary, or contradictory, making outfits like the Hoosier Motor Club indispensable. Founded as part of the broader Good Roads movement, these local motor clubs did far more than provide roadside assistance—they were the living GPS of the day, sending scout cars to survey detours, charting passable county roads, and publishing real-time route advisories in daily papers so fans could actually reach the stadium before kickoff.
Some beauties were on tap for Saturday, 10/23/1926, as Notre Dame hosted Penn State; Purdue vs. Wisconsin; Northwestern and Indiana would square off; and some of the area’s small schools held games.
