The 1991 NFL Draft: Defense, Defections, and a Destiny in Green Bay

On April 21, 1991, the NFL landscape shifted during a draft that was as much about who wasn’t there as who was. Held at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, the 1991 NFL Draft became a cornerstone for a dynasty, a cautionary tale for scouts, and the starting line for one of the greatest careers in football history.

The Rocket That Never Launched

The headline of the day wasn’t a draft pick, but a defection. Raghib “Rocket” Ismail, the explosive Notre Dame wide receiver and projected #1 overall pick, shocked the league by signing a record-breaking deal with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL on the morning of the draft. This move sent shockwaves through the front offices, forcing the New England Patriots (who held the first pick) to scramble. They eventually traded the pick to the Dallas Cowboys, who selected defensive tackle Russell Maryland.

A Defensive Dominance

The 1991 draft set a record that still stands out in the annals of gridiron history: the first six selections were all defensive players. No draft before or since had seen such a heavy emphasis on stopping the ball rather than moving it. Following Maryland were stars like Eric Turner, Bruce Pickens, and Mike Croel. It was a clear signal that the league’s defensive coordinators were finally getting their seat at the head of the table.

The Steal of the Century

While the first round was dominated by defense, the second round held a selection that would redefine the 1990s and 2000s. With the 33rd overall pick, the Atlanta Falcons selected a gunslinging quarterback from Southern Miss named Brett Favre. At the time, he was a backup with a reputation for a wild arm and a wilder lifestyle. Little did the league know that within a year, he would be traded to Green Bay, where he would begin a journey toward three MVPs and a Super Bowl ring.

The Jimmy Johnson Influence

For the Dallas Cowboys, April 21 was a masterclass in roster building. Armed with a staggering 18 selections (a byproduct of the Herschel Walker trade), Jimmy Johnson used this draft to solidify the “Doomsday Defense” revival. Beyond Maryland, the Cowboys snagged Alvin Harper, Kelvin Pritchett, and Erik Williams—players who would become the backbone of their three Super Bowl titles in four years.
