Wellington Mara Giants Owner

Born August 14, 1916, in Rochester, New York, was Wellington Mara Pro Football Hall of Fame was the famed owner of the New York Giants, who along with his brother, Jack, inherited the team from his father Tim in 1930 due to the latter's connection with Professional Boxing.

When he was young and watched his father's Giants practice and play from the sidelines, the New York players called him with a nickname "the Duke" because of the royal position in Great Britain, the Duke of Wellington. The NFL admired the innovations of Wellington so much that in 1941, they nicknamed the version of the Wilson Game ball " 'the Duke" in his honor.

Under Wellington's leadership the G-men won 6 NFL Titles, which included two Super Bowl wins.

South Florida Bulls Gridiron Traditions and History

From Sunshine State Upstart to Powerhouse Contender: Introducing the South Florida Bulls Football Program
Imagine a team born on a whim, defying expectations, and carving its own path to gridiron glory. That's the South Florida Bulls football program, a young powerhouse surging through the ranks of college football like a Florida hurricane. Their tale is one of audacious dreams, relentless spirit, and an unwavering drive to rewrite the record books.

Birth under the Sunshine: Established in 1997, the Bulls emerged as a vibrant symbol of the University of South Florida's growing ambitions. With no historical legacy, they had only talent, passion, and the sizzling Florida sun fueling their journey. Their first game, a resounding victory, set the stage for a remarkable ascent.

Conquering the Frontier: From humble beginnings in the NCAA's lower ranks, the Bulls clawed their way up, leaving a trail of shattered records and surprised opponents. The early days were paved with grit and determination, each win a testament to their unwavering spirit.

Charging into the Big Leagues: In 2001, the Bulls stormed the gates of the Division I-A (now FBS) level, facing established giants with youthful audacity. Undeterred by skepticism, they carved their niche, claiming conference titles, bowl victories, and even national rankings. They proved that passion and heart could match (and sometimes surpass) pedigree and tradition.

The Rocky Revolution: As their legend grew, so did their mascot, Rocky the Bull. More than just a symbol, Rocky embodies the Bulls' fearless spirit, charging onto the field with an infectious enthusiasm that ignites the stands. He's a reminder that dreams, no matter how audacious, can take flight on wings of unwavering belief.

On the following pages, we will cover aspects of the team, which may include the Program's Origin, the Biggest Games in School History, the Program's Top Players, the Most Significant Coaches, the Program's Logo and Mascot History, the team's Helmet Designs Over Time, and so much more.

Move forward into the school's Gridiron history on this page!

Helmet Design History of the Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines' winged helmet is not just a piece of equipment; it's a symbol of resilience, tradition, and iconic style. Its history, spanning over eight decades, reflects the evolution of the program itself, marked by innovation, adaptation, and a timeless commitment to maize and blue.

-1938: Taking Flight
The story begins in 1938 with the arrival of legendary coach Fritz Crisler. Seeking a distinctive identity for his Wolverines, Crisler spotted a stock helmet design in a sporting goods catalog featuring leather wings flanking the traditional facemask. Recognizing its potential, he had the wings painted maize and blue, giving birth to the now-iconic winged helmet.

-Early Tweaks and the Maize & Blue Revolution
Initially, the wings were smaller and more delicate, resembling those of a swallow. Over the next few years, they were gradually enlarged and stylized, taking on the bolder, predatory form we see today. This coincided with the "Maize & Blue Revolution" under Crisler, where Michigan athletics adopted a unified color scheme, further solidifying the helmet's visual identity.

-The Modern Era: Subtle Refinements and Enduring Legacy
The basic design of the winged helmet has remained remarkably consistent since the 1950s. However, subtle changes have been made over the years, such as the introduction of a single stripe down the center of the wings and the removal of the facemask's leather padding. These tweaks have modernized the look while preserving the helmet's timeless essence.

-More Than Just a Design: A Symbol of Wolverine Spirit
The Michigan Wolverines' winged helmet transcends mere aesthetics. It embodies the program's relentless pursuit of excellence, its unwavering confidence, and its connection to a rich footballing legacy. Players don the helmet with pride, knowing they represent generations of Wolverines who have battled on the gridiron under its iconic wings.

Mac Speedie Cleveland Browns HOF End

Mac Speedie, a name lost to the mists of football history, deserves a moment under the Friday night lights. Born in 1920 in rural Illinois, Speedie overcame a childhood disability to become a dominant wide receiver in the early days of the NFL. His story is of athletic prowess, defying stereotypes, and leaving an indelible mark on the game he loved.

Speedie's early life was shaped by hardship. Struck by Perthes disease, a bone deficiency, he was initially told he might never walk again. However, fueled by an unwavering determination, Speedie recovered and excelled in athletics. He became a star sprinter in high school and at the University of Utah, even showcasing his talents on the basketball court and football field.

Despite doubts about his size and injury history, Speedie was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1942. However, World War II intervened, and his professional career began not in the Motor City but with the Cleveland Browns of the upstart All-America Football Conference (AAFC).

It was with the Browns that Speedie's legend truly blossomed. Despite playing opposite Otto Graham, one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, Speedie became the AAFC's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards. His deceptive routes, exceptional catching ability, and surprising speed earned him the nickname "The Flea" and made him a nightmare for opposing defenses.

When the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, Speedie proved he could compete against the established stars of the league. He led the Browns to the NFL Championship in 1950 and continued to dominate throughout the decade, earning All-Pro honors on multiple occasions.

Speedie's career ended in 1952 after a knee injury forced him into early retirement. He left behind a legacy of broken records, highlight-reel catches, and a reputation as one of the most complete receivers of his era.

Frankford Yellow Jackets A bio on Frankford Pro Football

July 25, 1924 - The Frankford Yellow Jackets franchise was established and played in the NFL from 1924 through 1931. And where is Frankford? It is in the northeastern section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team's origin can be traced back to 1899 as the Frankford Athletic Association.

This early FAA had a membership fee of $10 per person., no small fee at that time when the average U.S. weekly wage was less than $13.00! The proceeds of the membership fee were to go to charity. Local charities such as the Frankford Hospital and the local Boy Scouts were known to receive donations from the Jackets. The Frankford team won the NFL Championship in 1926. But they were also a part of removing a championship from a rival a year earlier in 1925.

The Yellow Jackets protested a nonleague game that the Pottsville Maroons had played in their territory, Philadelphia, against the Notre Dame All-Stars. The League investigated this territorial rights issue, and the Maroons were found guilty of territory infringement; thus, they were suspended, giving the Chicago Cardinals the 1925 title. Unfortunately, in the early 1930s, the Jackets slipped into deep financial woes and were sold in bankruptcy court.

In his February 25, 2021 interview, our friend Upton Bell told us that his parents, Bert Bell and Francis Upton, purchased the struggling franchise and renamed them the Philadelphia Eagles!
