Harry Stuhldreher transformed from a starstruck bag boy carrying gear for the Massillon Tigers into the brilliant signal-caller who drove Notre Dame’s mythical Four Horsemen backfield.

Football Bio

October 14, 1901, Massillon, Ohio – Harry Stuhldreher was born.

Stuhldreher’s bio on footballfoundation.org reports that, as a young lad, Harry would carry bags for the Massillon Tigers star football player to get free entry to the Tigers’ games.

That star player’s name was Knute Rockne!

Rockne kept tabs on the kid, and eventually the boy grew into a fine football player whom Rockne had the pleasure of coaching at Notre Dame.

Harry Stuhldreher became one of Notre Dame’s legendary Four Horsemen.

Rockne chose Harry as the signal caller because of his leadership qualities.

Harry was the smallest of the Horsemen at 5 feet 7 inches tall and 151 pounds, but his quickness and elusiveness made him a dangerous weapon in the famed Irish offense.

Stuhldreher later coached for many seasons at Villanova and Wisconsin, achieving a career winning record.

Harry Stuhldreher proved that exceptional field vision and unmatched quickness eclipse pure physical size, leaving an enduring legacy as an iconic player and successful collegiate head coach.

Evidently he did not gallop far as his foot slipped out of bounds as the photo was snapped and as three husky Cardinals (at the left) charged him. Apparently it was an out-of-bounds play by Notre Dame, so that the latter could get the ball fifteen yards from the sideline." The Des Moines Register
