September 5, 1873 – Dave Campbell, an end from Harvard University who played from the 1898 through the 1901 season, was born.

He was selected as a consensus All-American in three straight years, 1899 through 1901, and the team he played on in 1901 went undefeated; he was the captain of that team.

In 1958, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Dave Campbell defined excellence for early Harvard football. He set a standard of dominance at the end position that rightfully earned him a permanent place in the College Football Hall of Fame. [National Football Foundation]
