We’ve all spent Saturday afternoons screaming at the TV, wondering what on earth the officiating crew was looking at. Starting this Friday, the Big Ten is finally pulling back the curtain.
Big News on the transparency of college games this season. Just when you might ask what those refs were thinking, they might tell us.
As we head into the 2026 College Football season, the Big Ten Conference made a splash announcement earlier this week.
Starting Friday, 9/4/2026, three conference games will include “access to live audio between the game referee and replay official during reviews, as well as a view inside the state-of-the-art Big Ten Replay Center,” according to ESPN.
This ought to be really cool as, uh, we have that Trend that was started by the USFL and XFL, now UFL, where you get to get the thoughts and hear the conversations that the officials are having and making decisions on those close plays and close calls, uh, that they talk about quite often.
I think it’s going to be really interesting to hear those conversations, especially if it comes to, you know, God forbid. If we have the targeting calls that, uh, have been resulting in ejections and? Some of the other things that are trickier to know a little bit about for the common fan.
When you get into some of these deeper rules in the rulebooks, and we’re not talking about the false starts and the offsides and things like that. We’re talking about these targetings and horse-caller’s face masks. And maybe some of the special penalty enforcement, like, you know?
Have to distance to the goal. Or, you know, a touchdown, uh, is called back for pass interference downfield. Those are the kind of things. We want to get the details from the zebras out on the field as it’s happening. I think it’s gonna be quite interesting and quite historic.
They may end up adapting this and put it into all games that are on in the Big Ten, and maybe some of the other conferences will pick up on that too. But for now, let’s tune in Friday nights here for the 2026 season, especially these first three games.
