- August 8, 1961 – The last of six exhibition meetings between the NFL and the Canadian Football League took place as the Hamilton Tiger Cats took apart the Buffalo Bills in Hamilton, 38 to 21. This was the lone victory of the CFL against the then-rival league NFL. It was probably the reason why no games have been played since between the two leagues.

- August 8, 1975 – Country singer Hank Williams Jr. falls off a mountainside of Montana’s Ajax Peak. The tumble was nearly 500 feet during a recreational mountain climb by The Entertainer. Incredibly, and that certainly is incredibly, he survived with just a skull fracture and multiple facial fractures. Now we’re sure glad he survived, as Williams later wrote and performed the Monday night football intro song, Are You Ready For Some Football? Now try getting that song out of your mind all day.
It’s a real earworm, but it’s a great one to have. And it always kicked off an exciting time in Monday night football. Sure miss that song, but I’m sure you’ll be singing it all day.
- August 8, 1984 – Carl Lewis, the fastest man alive, won his third gold medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Later in that same year, Mr. Lewis was drafted in the 12th round of the NFL by Gil Brandt and Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys. What smart guys those are. He declined a football offer to stay true to his Olympic track endeavors, and it paid off with a gold medal.
- August 8, 1987 – The Pro Football Hall of Fame conducted the enshrinements of the following legends: Larry Csonka, Len Dawson, Joe Greene, John Henry Johnson, Jim Langer, Don Maynard, ย and Gene Upshaw.
- August 8, 2004 – Legendary Broncos quarterback John Elway and former Lions running back Barry Sanders joined defensive end Carl Eller and tackle Bob Brown as members of the enshrined class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees for that famous 2004 induction class of the Hall of Fame.
