Host Darren Hays opens the discussion by emphasizing the significance of this milestone for Giants fans, who have witnessed the team's ups and downs over the decades. The narrative explores the team's struggles leading up to the Super Bowl era, particularly noting the long drought since their last championship in 1956. Gary Myers, a noted NFL insider, joins the conversation to provide insights into the pivotal figures who shaped the Giants during this transformative period, including legendary coach Bill Parcells and defensive coordinator Bill Belichick. Myers recounts how the team, built by general manager George Young, finally came together to form a championship-caliber roster, highlighting standout players like Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor.

The episode takes listeners through the 1986 season, detailing the Giants' rocky start with a close loss to the Dallas Cowboys but quickly shifting to a series of impressive victories that built the team's confidence. Hays captures the intensity of the season's games, from narrow wins against division rivals to dominant performances against top teams like the San Francisco 49ers. The hosts highlight how these experiences set the stage for the playoffs, where the Giants faced off against familiar foes, culminating in a decisive Super Bowl showdown against the Denver Broncos. The detailed play-by-play of the Super Bowl illustrates the team's resilience and strategy, showcasing how they overcame adversity to secure their first championship in three decades, with Phil Simms earning the MVP title.

Listeners gain a profound appreciation for the legacy of the 1986 Giants, not only through the lens of their Super Bowl success but also in the context of the franchise's history. The episode serves as a nostalgic reminder of the team's journey, exploring the emotional highs and lows that define the spirit of Giants football. And we're going to have a special guest we had on last year, Gary Myers, who was one of the initial NFL insiders on HBO and espn, had this to say about his team.

Gary Myers:

Well, I, I certainly think Parcels had a lot to do with it, as did Belichick.

Gary Myers:

George Young, the general manager, built the foundation of that team with, with Phil Sims and Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks.

Gary Myers:

They both inherited Harry Carson and George Martin.

Gary Myers:

So Parcels, once he got on the same page with George Young and George really understood the kind of Players that Bill wanted.

Gary Myers:

He did a really good job supplying him with players that fit into his system and that he can win with.

Gary Myers:

The 86 team was the Giants first championship in 30 years.

Gary Myers:

But they went into that season fully confident that it was their turn.

Gary Myers:

They had made the playoffs in 84 and 85.

Gary Myers:

They lost both times in the divisional round and they thought they were taking those steps that were going to lead to a championship and felt 86 was their year.

Gary Myers:

And, you know, you had some really powerful teams, the 84, 49ers, the 85 Bears and the 86 Giants.

Gary Myers:

I think now that we look back on the entirety of the super bowl.

Host:her and had a great season in:Host:

But many people don't realize that the Giants came out on their very first game, a Monday Night football game on September 8 and lost to their rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

Host:

It was a close game right down till the end, but the Giants ended up falling in that game 31 to 28 to the vaunted Cowboys team.

Host:

And the Cowboys end up scoring 14 points in the final quarter to take that victory 31, 28.

Host:

So they started off putting the Giants in a position of being 01 on the season, and things weren't looking too good, you know, after those two brilliant seasons, 84 and 85.

Host:

But they put it all together.

Host:

Next they came out and smoked the San Diego Chargers 20 to 7.

Host:

Then they defeated the LA Raiders 14 to 9.

Host:rleans Saints, they beat them:Host:

Another nail biter was another victory.

Host:

St.

Host:

Louis Cardinals were defeated by the Giants 13 to 6 in week five.

Host:

And on October 12th they went to another divisional game, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Host:

And they blew the doors off the Eagles 35 to 3 was the win there.

Host:

Then they got into a little bit of a slump because they went out to play Seattle out on the west coast.

Host:

And the 12th man came alive in the kingdom.

Host:

And The Seahawks romped 12 to 17.

Host:

Again, it was a close game.

Host:

The Giants just couldn't overcome that.

Host:

So they were sitting there at 5 and 2.

Host:

Then they went to a bunch of divisional games.

Host:t some revenge on the Cowboys:Host:

Identical scores.

Host:, defeated the Broncos:Host:

The Giants beat them at San Francisco 21 to 17.

Host:

And people really started to take notice of them then.

Host:nother game with the Redskins:Host:

Louis Cardinals 27 to 7.

Host:

They knocked off the Cardinals who were division rival at that time with the annual NFC east.

Host:

And then a game with the Green Bay packers to end the season 55 24.

Host:

The first round of the playoffs.

Host:

They played the 49ers again and boy, this time they played it in New York.

Host:

And what a difference that made.

Host:

The giants won by 46 points 49 to 3.

Host:

They beat the powerful San Francisco 49ers and they defeated the Redskins for the third time, 17 to nothing was that score.

Host:three, this time they won by:Host:

And what a game that truly was there on the Super Bowl.

Host:

And the ended up being played in the Rose bowl at Dan Reeves against Bill Parcels.

Host:

And what a game that was.

Host:

The Giants went, you know, lot were down on the scoreboard.

Host:

Rich Carlos kicked a 48 yard field goal.

Host:

The Giants came back with Phil Sims throwing to Zeke moat for a six yard touchdown pass.

Host:

Take the lead seven to three.

Host:

And but Elway came storming back, took the lead 107 when he ran in from four yards out.

Host:

And the Giant safety Martin tackled Elway in the end zone to make it 10 to 9 for a safety.

Host:

And Mark Bavaro caught a 13 year pass from Sims.

Host:Take goes:Host:

Raul Allegri 21 yard field goal.

Host:

Joe Morris scored a one yard touchdown and the Giants are up 26 to 10.

Host:

Then Phil McConkey a six yard pass from Sims to make it 33 to 10.

Host:

And Rich Carlis kicked a field goal.

Host:

But Otis Anderson two yard rush in the fourth quarter to make it 39 13.

Host:

And Van Johnson caught a 47 yard pass from John Elway to put the Broncos at 20 on a scoreboard losing by 19 and get, you know, getting that thing game for them.

Host:

Phil Sims was your Super Bowl MVP.

Host:

And the Giants won their first Super bowl in 30 years.

Host:

So 86 was a great season for them.

Host:

You know, great players like Lawrence Taylor were a big part of that.

Host:

But you know, just some tremendous play and some tremendous coaching from Belichick and Parcels and the Giants are Super bowl champions.

Host:

So wait till next time we'll talk about some more great Giants History next Monday and hope you enjoy that and hope you stay tuned.
