But what a historic weekend it was.
Speaker A:We had quarterbacks reaching major milestones, rookies wreaking havoc, and a few overtime games, some with some surprise endings.
Speaker A:,:Speaker A:Hello my football friends.
Speaker A:This is Darren Hayes of pigskindispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal deposit of football history.
Speaker A:And welcome to of last week's games in the NFL.
Speaker A:is over,:Speaker A:Ed Cleese joins us as he does every week during the season.
Speaker A:Ed, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
Speaker A:Hello, Darren.
Speaker A:Ed, you seem a little solemn today.
Speaker B:I am just still stewing, Darren, and if I may, I would just like to take the floor for a moment before we delve into the history, just to get some things off of my chest, if that's okay.
Speaker A:Certainly, certainly.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:So back In November of:Speaker B:The first time the Giants ever went to Landover after the Redskins moved from rfk.
Speaker B:And that was a Sunday night game and it was an important game.
Speaker B:And when that game ended, Darren, I said, you know what the good news is?
Speaker B:I'll never have to see anything like that ever again.
Speaker B:Because what happened that night, Darren, is early in the game our quarterback Gus Farot scored a touchdown and in celebration he banged his head against the wall.
Speaker B:He knocked himself out of the game for the rest of the game.
Speaker B:And Jeff Hostetler came in as his backup that night and proceeded along with the Giants and the rest of his Redskins teammates to produce a comedy of errors that I'd never quite seen before in an NFL game.
Speaker B:It went into overtime, tied at 7 and in overtime both teams exchanged missed field goals, turnovers.
Speaker B:And then as the Redskins were driving for the what would have been game winning field goal, Michael Westbrook, a receiver, didn't like what he a ref call so he took his helmet off and threw it 15 yard penalty which knocked them out of field goal range.
Speaker B:This all culminated in a 7 to 7 tie.
Speaker B:And I said to myself that has haunted me for 30 years, but at least I'll never have to relive it again.
Speaker B:And you know what happened, Darren, just this past Sunday?
Speaker A:History.
Speaker A:I know what happened.
Speaker B:I would say history repeated itself, but it actually didn't because this was somehow worse.
Speaker B:Way worse.
Speaker B:I don't need to go into what happened.
Speaker B:I think at this point everybody knows.
Speaker B:But what I can tell you Darren is at the end of this game.
Speaker B:This is not hindsight.
Speaker B:This is not me going back and looking only at the results.
Speaker B:With about 40 seconds left, Darren, I'm pacing on my deck.
Speaker B:We just got the greatest gift ever by the Giants missing a field goal and then fumbling in overtime.
Speaker B:We're going to win this game on a miracle, right?
Speaker B:We're going to win it on a miracle.
Speaker B:Thank goodness for finally catching a break.
Speaker B:And with 40 seconds left and the clock running, I start saying, what are you guys doing?
Speaker B:Go faster, go faster, go faster.
Speaker B:I'm like, what are they doing?
Speaker B:What are they doing?
Speaker B:What are they doing?
Speaker B:I'm not panicked yet because you know they're going to eventually spike it or get up and run a play.
Speaker B:And then about the 15 second mark, Darren, I'm losing my mind.
Speaker B:I'm jumping up and down on the deck and I notice there's nothing happening on our sideline.
Speaker B:They're clueless.
Speaker B:It's unbelievable, Darren.
Speaker B:And then, of course, what happens happens.
Speaker B:I don't even want to say what happens, but what happens happens.
Speaker B:It's over.
Speaker B:I stand there in stunned disbelief.
Speaker B:And you know what I really think it boils down to, Darren, and I'm totally serious about this is me on my deck.
Speaker B:People say, do you think you know more than an NFL coach?
Speaker B:And when it comes to that, the answer is yes.
Speaker B:I watch way more football than Dan Quinn or.
Speaker B:Or any other head coach watches.
Speaker B:They watch film.
Speaker B:They know a thousand times more about strategy and formations and breaking down film than I do.
Speaker B:But they don't watch a lot of football as a fan, as a spectator, start to finish.
Speaker B:So I don't think they have all this clock stuff, all the nuance down like me on my deck does, and it's baffling to me.
Speaker B:And they didn't understand what was going on.
Speaker B:They had trouble with the math because they probably just don't see it very often.
Speaker B:e way I saw seven to seven in:Speaker A:Well, I, I mean, I think almost every NFL team, maybe the commanders are the exception, has a time expert up in the booth.
Speaker A:He's in the headset.
Speaker A:That's where a lot.
Speaker A:So these coaches don't have to think about.
Speaker A:They.
Speaker A:They've got a lot going on.
Speaker A:Obviously, if they do have a guy, he ought to be canned, because that was probably.
Speaker A:But even Jaden Daniels, a starting quarterback in the NFL, you, you know, Better than to.
Speaker A:I mean, the play call was horrendous to have that rollout.
Speaker A:Why have a pass play go.
Speaker A:Go to get you in the spot that your kicker likes to kick from the most.
Speaker A:You know, center of the field, hash whatever he wants, you know, take a knee there, you know, spike the ball, get your kicking team on there.
Speaker A:That's a smart.
Speaker A:What they did.
Speaker A:I have no idea.
Speaker B:Well, it was a total.
Speaker B:It was a total panic because they.
Speaker B:What happened is they were trying to run a pass play.
Speaker B:I think that was going to result in.
Speaker B:They should have either wrote it earlier or they thought Daniels would throw it out of bounds.
Speaker B:That.
Speaker B:You cannot absolve Jane Daniels from this at all.
Speaker B:And I'm not.
Speaker B:Because once the ball was snapped, you have to trust that your quarterback can know that, okay?
Speaker B:These guys are buffoons on the sidelines.
Speaker B:I'm not going to let them make me look this bad.
Speaker B:They put him in a terrible position.
Speaker B:They should have been jumping up and down with 30 seconds left to just spike the ball right now, you know, as the time was ticking.
Speaker B:So he.
Speaker B:He.
Speaker B:He.
Speaker B:He.
Speaker B:He wears this as well, but not to the level of the coaches.
Speaker B:And what you talked about, Darren, is the.
Speaker B:The little expert everybody employs.
Speaker B:Now, I don't really see how that helps on game day, because if you have somebody in the booth and the clock's ticking down, what is he yelling into?
Speaker B:Dan Quinn's headset, Who's yelling into the offensive coordinator's headset, who's yelling into Daniel's headset?
Speaker B:You know what I mean?
Speaker B:It's like, I don't know if there's enough time for that many cooks in the kitchen.
Speaker A:It choreographs the whole ending, you know, you.
Speaker A:Especially when you have.
Speaker A:Take your last time out, you know, and I can't remember when they took that last time out, but early.
Speaker A:But.
Speaker B:So they.
Speaker A:They had time to sit there and say, okay, here's what could play out here.
Speaker A:Now, who knows that?
Speaker A:You know, who can imagine that Scatter Boo is going to get a forced fumble on him, and Washington's going to recover and go right down the field.
Speaker A:You know, like you said, it looked like a miracle moment the other way.
Speaker A:And then the Giants end up getting a gift, you know, and it's, you know, both of them.
Speaker A:They're kissing their sister.
Speaker A:They both blew the game.
Speaker A:They both had the opportunity to win the game.
Speaker A:Both teams did.
Speaker A:And didn't seem like either team wanted to do that, but.
Speaker A:Well, I think.
Speaker A:I think maybe we probably talked about this one A little bit is we have multiple other games to talk about this week from this past weekend, but if you want to have a final word on it, go ahead.
Speaker B:No, I think I've said what I needed to say and it will live.
Speaker B:Like I said, it will live in the nightmares forever.
Speaker B:Hard one to shoot.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:You.
Speaker A:You won't forget this game.
Speaker A:You have that going for you.
Speaker B:I will not forget this game.
Speaker A:Most NFL fans will not forget that.
Speaker B:I will not forget this game.
Speaker B:No, Darren, I will not.
Speaker A:But that was one of the overtime games we had this weekend.
Speaker A:We had three overtime games all sort of late Sunday into Monday.
Speaker A:Sunday night.
Speaker A:It was, it was great.
Speaker A:All the, the final games were, were overtime throwers.
Speaker A:And I'm sitting there thinking, man, three overtime games in one weekend.
Speaker A:That is quite a bit.
Speaker A:But it's not even anywhere near a record.
Speaker A:five games, I believe back in:Speaker A:There was five overtime games in one.
Speaker A:It pretty kind of unusual for three OT games, but not by far the record.
Speaker B:Not the record.
Speaker B:Well, the NFC east may have almost set a record because they had four teams playing this weekend.
Speaker B:One, two teams playing each other, and nobody won a game, which is kind of funny.
Speaker B:The Cowboys lost their first ever.
Speaker B:This does not count Thanksgiving, of course.
Speaker B:This is just Thursday Night Football, their first ever home loss on Thursday Night Football.
Speaker B:And now we've had two NFC east teams, Darren, Lose games this year in regulation when they were kicking off with eight seconds or less on the clock, tied or leading.
Speaker B:So that is bananas that both the Cowboys and the Eagles now have losses in that specific situation.
Speaker A:Yeah, it looked very similar, almost not really a mirror image, but the similar circumstance of having, know that Jacksonville having that great kick return and getting themselves into the field goal range.
Speaker A:You know, of course their guy can kick from the other end zone.
Speaker A:I think he's, he's got quite a leg on him.
Speaker A:Mr. Little does, but that was really cool.
Speaker A:But there was a really surprising factor because Jacksonville's defense held Philadelphia to 22 yards rushing.
Speaker A:22 Yards rushing in the NFL.
Speaker A:I think you and I blocking for each other might be able to muster out 22 yards maybe in a whole game.
Speaker A:This is an NFL team against NFL team.
Speaker A:That is quite a testament to Jacksonville and maybe with.
Speaker A:Mr. What they had a guy retired last week and traded Johnson another starter.
Speaker A:So you get rid of half your offensive line and you expect to, you know, do well.
Speaker A:You're not going to run the ball.
Speaker B:I guess that's, that's wild.
Speaker B:We've got some other Head to head Notes the the Packers.
Speaker B:You know the Bears may have broken through last year with that big win against the packers in the playoffs, but they still haven't figured out their Lambo problems because now the packers have won 14 of the last 17 games between the two teams in Lambeau.
Speaker B:So that's still a bugaboo for the Bears and that is now the Bengals have beaten the Dolphins three times in a row.
Speaker B:That is actually the Bengals longest streak ever against the Dolphins.
Speaker B:he Dolphins that spanned from:Speaker B:So the Bengals have finally figured out the Dolphins mystery.
Speaker B:And the other thing that I thought was kind of interesting is we have the Saints and Bucks this year so far and we're only in week five.
Speaker B:Both of those teams have had the somewhat rare three game homestand.
Speaker B:It's becoming a little more common with the new schedule, but it's still rare.
Speaker B:Both of them lost all three games.
Speaker A:Wow, that is unbelievable.
Speaker A:I didn't catch that part.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker A:Yeah, very interesting.
Speaker A:But when you're speaking about the Saints, you know the.
Speaker A:With 200 yards passing, Kyler Murray has really put himself into some elite company.
Speaker A:Now I would never thought this about Kyler Murray.
Speaker A:This is kind of surprising to me.
Speaker A:That marks his 15th career 200 yard passing game with 50 yards rushing in a game.
Speaker A:ed or are tied with him since:Speaker A:I would never thought he would have had that many games of that stature.
Speaker B:Yeah, he's got, I mean he's had, you know, I'm not a huge fan but he's certainly had a non bust career depending on how you want to look at it or spin it.
Speaker B:He's still going to need to get.
Speaker A:A lot better though.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Kind of quiet in those games I guess because they weren't very popular.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:That's true.
Speaker B:since:Speaker B:In:Speaker B:The:Speaker B:se losses for the Chargers in:Speaker A:Yeah, that's the first time since Harbaugh was with the Chargers and with the Carolina Panthers later on that year where he didn't play any games, where he was part of a five game losing streak till now.
Speaker B:Yikes.
Speaker B:Kind of surprising.
Speaker B:And now San Francisco.
Speaker B:This is kind of cool in a way, but I guess Seattle probably doesn't care.
Speaker B:That's the fifth straight time the 49ers have won in Seattle in the regular season.
Speaker B:I'm sure Seattle will point out, well, we won the one that really mattered last year.
Speaker B:We beat him by 35 in the playoffs and we won the super bowl, so who cares?
Speaker B:But the 49ers do have their number in Seattle.
Speaker B:And as we saw, Josh Allen got his first ever overtime win, which is kind of strange.
Speaker B:On Monday night he was 07.
Speaker B:Now he's 1 and 7.
Speaker B:And you know, it's funny, those, those losses, they're very memorable.
Speaker B:Even as a non Bills fan.
Speaker B:I remember the playoff losses, of course, the 13 second game being one of them.
Speaker B:In Kansas City last year against Denver, he had one against Houston, I remember.
Speaker B:And then even in the regular season, I remember they had that crazy game against the Vikings where they fumbled into the end zone and Justin Jefferson had that wild like 4th and 22 catch.
Speaker B:They had the jets punt return on opening the opening Monday night of the season a couple years ago and overtime that they lost.
Speaker B:And they also had a Tom Brady game in Tampa where they lost in overtime.
Speaker B:So maybe Josh Allen has shaken those overtime ghosts.
Speaker A:Yeah, one thing that really got shaken is the Rams after that game, fired their kicker the next morning.
Speaker A:And so they are shopping for a new kicker.
Speaker A:So missing two field goals and you lose by three in overtime.
Speaker A:I guess that'll do it to you.
Speaker B:No more thicker kicker.
Speaker A:Right, Right.
Speaker A:I had, you know, some really exciting things that happened historically for Jared Goff.
Speaker A:You know that great win that him and the Lions had over the Cardinals.
Speaker A:He had a three touchdown game zero turnover performance in week five.
Speaker A:Now he's racked up 12 touchdowns and no turnovers in these first five games.
Speaker A:And, and that's making him the first player in NFL history to ever do that feat in NFL history in the first five games of a season, which I found remarkable that nobody's ever done that.
Speaker A:But I guess you always fumble the ball away or you throw an interception.
Speaker B:Somewhere or you don't have that, or if you're playing conservatively not turning it over, you're not also getting the touchdowns.
Speaker A:Right, right, right.
Speaker A:So that, so that's, that's a big milestone he hit.
Speaker B:Yeah, for sure, for sure.
Speaker B:You ready for score, Gami?
Speaker A:Yeah, well, I have one One more thing, because I got to talk about my guy.
Speaker A:Aaron.
Speaker A:Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker A:That's right.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:He had with his victory over the Colts last weekend.
Speaker A:That's his 90th career game with three or more touchdown passes.
Speaker A:That puts him up in elite company.
Speaker A:You know, we know he passed, I believe, Ben Roethlisberger last week with the touchdown passes and wins this week with that 90 game, he joins the elite company of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning as the sole players in NFL history that have a 90 game mark of throwing three touchdown passes.
Speaker B:Again, that's an impressive list.
Speaker A:It sure is.
Speaker A:Sort of a who's who.
Speaker A:The other thing I have is rookie David Bailey of the Jets.
Speaker A:You know, the rookie sensation.
Speaker A:sacks and tied Hugh Douglas's:Speaker A:To make matters worse for Cleveland, DeSean Watson was brought down a staggering eight times on the afternoon.
Speaker A:I'm sure he was hitting the ice tub earlier this week.
Speaker B:Well, if you listen to our picks, Darren, you would have known that was coming.
Speaker A:Yeah, that's true.
Speaker A:That's true.
Speaker A:All right, let's get into some Scoragami score gummy.
Speaker B:Well, we'll start where we always start.
Speaker B:Darren, what do you think?
Speaker B:Well, I'll just.
Speaker B:I'll be a spoiler.
Speaker B:There was no Scoragami this weekend.
Speaker B:However, there was some pretty low numbers.
Speaker B:So what do you think was the most rare score on the board?
Speaker A:I'm gonna say that.
Speaker A:45:17 Raiders in New England game.
Speaker B:No, and that wasn't even close.
Speaker B:Actually, that has happened 27 times.
Speaker B:Really?
Speaker B:There are three games on the board, Darren, that have happened fewer than 10 times.
Speaker B:And your game is the winner.
Speaker B:The third, the Steelers:Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker B:The.
Speaker B:The Commander's Giants tie has at 27.
Speaker B:27 Has only happened seven times.
Speaker B:Kind of weird.
Speaker B:Washington is involved in three of those seven games.
Speaker B:There was one in:Speaker B:And then the.
Speaker B:one we had before that was in:Speaker B:So the Red.
Speaker B:The Washington has had the last two 27 to 27 ties.
Speaker B:game I'm sure you remember in:Speaker B:27, 27 Redskins and Steelers.
Speaker B:Bobby Lane kicks and field goals for y'.
Speaker B:All.
Speaker A:re if my parents remember the:Speaker B:Gotcha.
Speaker B:Gotcha.
Speaker B:Yeah, the.
Speaker B:The most common score of the.
Speaker B:Of the weekend was 130 times.
Speaker B:We've had a:Speaker B:But overall, Darren, this was a pretty rare week.
Speaker B:That was the only game that was over 100 times.
Speaker B:So our score gummy index blows all the other four weeks out of the water.
Speaker B:We have a new leader.
Speaker B:It's a 45.8 is the score of.
Speaker B:Index score for week five, which passes week one as the most rare.
Speaker B:53.75.
Speaker A:I. I didn't think it could be done, but that we got close.
Speaker A:What, in week three.
Speaker B:I'm sorry.
Speaker B:Week three.
Speaker B:Week three.
Speaker B:I don't want to.
Speaker B:I don't want to cheat.
Speaker B:Week three.
Speaker B:Week three was 53.18.
Speaker B:So this one is.
Speaker B:This one is now number one.
Speaker A:Wow, that's.
Speaker A:That's amazing.
Speaker A:I thought those 53s were going to probably hold up all year, but now we're in the 40s.
Speaker B:45.8.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker A:We had.
Speaker B:We had several that were the.
Speaker B:The mean on this one was way lower.
Speaker A:Okay, there you go.
Speaker A:Maybe I won't get you started again, but maybe that not.
Speaker A:Not having that tie ended up making it lower.
Speaker A:Maybe it would have been, you know, a 30 to 27 game.
Speaker A:Either way would have maybe shot that up.
Speaker B:It would have shot that up a little bit.
Speaker B:So I guess maybe this.
Speaker B:It was good for the Scoragami index.
Speaker A:And bad for my heart, I guess so.
Speaker A:I, you know, I almost thought when I saw that 20, 27.
Speaker A:27 To 27.
Speaker A:I thought we might have the scoregasm, but I don't know if it counts if your team doesn't win, but at least.
Speaker B:Yeah, no, there was.
Speaker B:There was none of that on the deck.
Speaker B:I can tell you that right now.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker B:All right.
Speaker A:All right.
Speaker A:Well, that is a great week of history.
Speaker A:You know, it's great to look back at.
Speaker A:Some games were just played within, you know, just hours ago, days ago.
Speaker A:And you can take some great history out of it and make it evergreen and appreciate what these folks are doing in the modern times compared to all of NFL history.
Speaker A:We're glad that we could share it with you and Ed, that you could join us and help us to enjoy this history.
