Can one player truly do it all? Before the era of specialized roles, Randall Cunningham was a one-man wrecking crew for the UNLV Rebels. With an arm that could launch rockets and legs that left defenders grasping at air, he didn’t just play quarterback—he redefined the position while simultaneously serving as the best punter in the nation. From the neon lights of Las Vegas to a legendary 16-year NFL career, “The Ultimate Weapon” proved that versatility is the greatest threat on the gridiron.

Football Bio
March 27, 1963 – Santa Barbara, California – Randall Cunningham, the Nevada Las Vegas quarterback with the great moves and an arm to go with it, was born.
The NFF says that Randall Cunningham left Las Vegas as the most accomplished player in school history, as not only was he the career-best passer and punter at UNLV ever, but he also became the first Rebel player to enter the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016. First Team All-America punter in 1983, Cunningham received second team honors as a senior while also garnering honorable mention as a quarterback. The two-position star broke 18 UNLV records, including career marks for 8020 passing yards, 59 touchdown passes, and a stellar punting average of 45.6 yards.
Randall is only the third quarterback in the history of collegiate football to pass for at least 2,500 yards in three consecutive seasons, and he finished his career with 142 punts for 6,471 yards. After college, Randall was picked in round 2 of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Cunningham played in the NFL for 17 years with the Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and Baltimore Ravens. The four-time Pro Bowl player also finished second in NFL history for rushing yards by a QB.
Conclusion
Randall Cunningham was a generational talent who arrived ahead of his time. His collegiate career at UNLV set a nearly unreachable bar for dual-threat players, combining elite passing efficiency with an All-American punting leg. In the NFL, he became a cultural icon with the Philadelphia Eagles and later orchestrated one of the greatest offenses in league history with the 1998 Minnesota Vikings. Whether escaping a certain sack or pinning an opponent inside the five-yard line, Cunningham’s legacy as “The Ultimate Weapon” is securely enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
