On October 26, 1993, a dream that began on a drive down I-85 became a reality: the Carolinas were officially home to the NFL’s 29th franchise. Led by former Baltimore Colts player Jerry Richardson, the Carolina Panthers didn’t just join the league; they stormed into it, rewriting the record books for expansion teams and forging a unique identity that bridged two states.

The Vision: Bringing the NFL to the Carolinas

The journey began in 1987 when Jerry Richardson, a successful businessman and former NFL champion, set his sights on bringing professional football to Charlotte. Unlike other expansion bids that focused on a single city, Richardson’s vision was regional. He wanted a team that represented both North and South Carolina.

To prove the region’s hunger for football, Richardson Sports organized sell-out preseason games in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Columbia. This grassroots support, combined with a revolutionary “Permanent Seat License” (PSL) funding model for a privately financed stadium, made the Carolina bid the clear favorite.

1995: A Historic Debut

Under the leadership of General Manager Bill Polian and Head Coach Dom Capers, the Panthers took the field for the first time in 1995. While their permanent home in Charlotte was under construction, the team played its inaugural season at Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium in South Carolina.

The Panthers started 0-5, but a legendary 36-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Sam Mills against the New York Jets sparked a turnaround. The Panthers finished their first season 7-9—at the time, the best record for an expansion team in NFL history.

Establishing a Legacy: “Keep Pounding”

The franchise quickly moved from “expansion team” to “contender.” In only their second season (1996), they won the NFC West and reached the NFC Championship game. Over the decades, the Panthers have been defined by legendary figures:

  • Sam Mills: The “Field Mouse” whose battle with cancer led to the “Keep Pounding” mantra that remains the team’s rallying cry.
  • Steve Smith Sr.: The fiery wide receiver who became the franchise’s all-time leading pass-catcher.
  • Cam Newton: The 2015 NFL MVP who led the “Cardiac Cats” to a 15-1 season and a berth in Super Bowl 50.

Ownership and the Modern Era

In 2018, the franchise transitioned from founder Jerry Richardson to billionaire David Tepper. Today, the team continues to play in the heart of Uptown Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium, flanked by the iconic bronze panther statues that have guarded the gates since 1996.
