The early NFL franchise in Portsmouth, Ohio competed for a couple of NFL titles in the League's first decade.

This team played an important part in early professional football and, in particular, the early NFL. The legacy of the franchise continues today as the Spartans moved to a different state and became the Detroit Lions.

Born August 13, 1913, in Portsmouth, Virginia, was NFL Films "Voice of God," John Facenda. The son of Italian immigrants got into broadcasting and sports event announcing, becoming a fixture in the Philadelphia area. His famous voice was marketed Nationally when he became the narrator of NFL Films and the Football Follies videos.

Facenda, with his resonant baritone and poetic delivery, is synonymous with the NFL Films sound. While his narration often evoked a sense of grandeur and drama, the man behind the voice was also known for his wit and humor.

One story tells of Facenda recording a particularly intense narration for a highlight reel. After a long session, the director asked him to try a different tone, perhaps something more light-hearted. Facenda, without missing a beat, launched into a comedic impression of a sports announcer, complete with exaggerated enthusiasm and over-the-top commentary. The entire crew burst into laughter, and the session took a lighter turn.

Another anecdote highlights Facenda's dedication to his craft. While recording a script, he stumbled over a particularly complex sentence. Frustrated, he exclaimed, "I can't say this!" The director, amused, suggested they cut the line altogether. Facenda, however, insisted on finding a way to make it work. After several takes, he finally delivered the line flawlessly, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to perfection.

These glimpses into Facenda's personality reveal a man who was not only a master of his craft but also possessed a quick wit and a tireless work ethic. His ability to seamlessly transition from the epic to the everyday is what made him such a beloved and iconic figure in the world of sports broadcasting.

The story goes that while sitting in a bar discussing how interesting the slow-motion game sequences of NFL films were to another bar patron; he was overheard talking by another customer in the establishment, Ed Sabol, the founder of NFL Films. That was in 1965, and after reading script after script, Facenda continued on as the voice of NFL Films until he died in 1984.

Andrew grew up in Kansas City and has been a Chiefs fan since childhood. He went to college at Wichita State University and studied sports management. After graduating, he worked for a fraternity and then started his own podcast called “Hallowed Ground: The Sports Museum Podcast.” In 2021, he decided to pursue a career in sports heritage and enrolled in the Museum Studies program at the University of Kansas. As part of his studies, he interned at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, during the summer of 2023.

Andrew recommends several things to see at the Hall of Fame, but he likes a gray metal panel on the second-floor and its interesting story in NFL history.

Ralph Harvey "Busher" Jackson wasn't born into hockey royalty. He honed his skills on the frozen ponds of Toronto, the wind whipping through his hair as he chased a puck under the winter sun. Yet, from those humble beginnings, he carved a path to hockey immortality, becoming one of the game's most feared scorers and a cornerstone of the Toronto Maple Leafs dynasty.

Jackson's impact went beyond mere goals. He embodied the spirit of the "Kid Line," a trio of young talents who injected the Maple Leafs with an electrifying brand of hockey. His powerful skating and pinpoint passing complemented perfectly the scoring prowess of Joe Primeau and Charlie Conacher. They tore through defenses, dazzling fans with their offensive pyrotechnics and leading the Leafs to their first Stanley Cup in 1932.

But Jackson wasn't just about offense. He was a tenacious defender, his grit and physicality earning him the respect of opponents and the nickname "Busher." He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty, sacrificing his body for the good of the team and embodying the era's rough-and-tumble style of play.

His career wasn't without challenges. Injuries and off-ice issues occasionally derailed his trajectory, prompting a trade to the New York Americans and later the Boston Bruins. Yet, his talent and passion remained undimmed. He continued to score, earning a reputation as a clutch performer who thrived on the big stage.

In 1971, decades after his playing days ended, Jackson's true legacy was recognized. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, a testament to his undeniable impact on the game. He wasn't just a scorer; he was a pioneer, a symbol of Toronto's early hockey glory, and a reminder that greatness can sometimes blossom in the most unexpected places, on frozen ponds under a winter sky.

His NFL career spanned multiple teams, including the New York Giants, Cleveland Bulldogs, and Detroit Wolverines.

Owen's most notable achievement came in 1934 when he was part of the New York Giants team that captured the NFL championship. His contributions in the trenches helped pave the way for the Giants' offensive success. While his individual statistics might not stand out compared to modern football, his impact on the game during his era was significant.

A world-class sprinter, Young's athleticism translated seamlessly to football at the University of Illinois.
