First APFA Game Played

September 26, 1920 - The first game featuring an American Professional Football Association team would be played on September 26, 1920 as the Rock Island Independents beat up on their non-league opponent the St. Paul Ideals 48-0. The APFA would change its name to the National Football League in 1922 so in essence this is the very first NFL game played involving at least one team that was in Ralph Hay’s organizational meeting on September 17, 1920.

Andy Kerr

The Brilliant football coach that famously led the the 1932 Colgate team to an undefeated season.

Cal Tech Eyeglass Shield

I’m a sucker for oddball pieces of player equipment that one person or another developed along the way, and the more quickly the equipment died out, the better. Facial and eye protection is among football’s richest veins for oddball equipment. The nose guards of the 1890s and 1910s led to executioner’s masks in the 1920s, and birdcage face masks in the 1930s, and a proliferation of Lucite and rubber-covered metal masks in the 1950s. — www.footballarchaeology.com

Timothy P. Brown takes his Football Archaeology back to an innovation by the Cal tech team where they protected the players who wore glasses with a face shield.

Byron Whizzer White - CU Buffs

Byron \"Whizzer\" White, Colorado football’s first All-American, led the nation in rushing and scoring during a prolific 1937 season. Outside of football, Whit... — www.youtube.com

The great Colorado Buffalo back went much higher in life than football took him.

Frank Hinkey Gets His Bell Rung

Frank Hinkey played end for Yale from 1891 to 1894, earning All-American status all four years. Slight of build, Hinkey was a ferocious competitor and hitter, becoming the game’s premier shutdown end nearly one century before shutdown corners came into vogue. — www.footballarchaeology.com

Timothy P. Brown of Football Archaeology.com deleivers a remarkable story on a player that was concussed, who kept on playing in the late 19th century

About David Neil Drews

Two weeks after graduating with a finance degree in 1985 from the University of Tennessee, I entered a corporate banking training program at First Union National Bank in Charlotte, N.C. In 1989, I became an assistant vice-president of North American real estate lending for Banque Indosuez in New York, New York.

At thirty, I decided to follow my passion for literature, writing, and teaching, so I returned to UT and earned an English Literature degree.

I taught English for 16 year — www.linkedin.com

Raised in Tennessee and Denver, David Neil Drews was a commercial banker and then
an English teacher prior to becoming a writer. He has two bachelor’s degrees from the University
of Tennessee, one in finance and one in English Literature, and a masters in English Education.
Iron Tigers reflects his passion for sports, American history, and fiction. Since attending his first
University of Tennessee Volunteers football game in 1970, his blood has run deep orange. Yet,
after spending five years researching the legendary 1899 Sewanee football team, some say there
is a tinge of purple to his complexion.

Litkenhous Ratings

Litkenhous Difference by Score Ratings System - This mathematical system  was used to rank football and basketball teams, based on the score differential of common opponents and opponents in general during a season. The Litrating system was developed by Vanderbilt University professor Edward E. Litkenhous and his brother, Francis H. Litkenhous.

Sideline Plays and How We See the Past and Future

Studying history helps us understand that each of us understands the world through a unique perspective that results from the time and place we were born, educated, and all our life experiences. For example, as someone living in 2023, it isn’t easy to see the world through the eyes of someone living in the 1920s and 1930s because we bring a worldview informed by the events of the last 100 or 90 years. Likewise, try as they might, those living in the 1920s and 1930s struggled to see the future, — www.footballarchaeology.com

Football Archaeology provides a brilliant viewpoint of how side-line plays were viewed prior to 1932 and the strategy was a bit different than we understand it today.
