Polamalu feeds displaced workers
An April 21 , 2020 article by Joshua Axelrod on Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.com chronicles a great act of generosity by retired Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers Safety, Troy Polamalu and his wife Theodora Holmes. The couple according to the story purchased gift cards to local restaurants to feed some 400 families of laid-off government workers in Westmoreland County.
What an awesome gift, it not only gives a couple meals to the struggling families, but it also helps out the local restaurants that for all intents and purposes are in the same circumstance of interrupted finances due COVID-19 restrictions as the receivers of the cards.
Mr. Axelrod’s report found that local Westmorland County, PA government officials started getting inquiries, through a third party, a few weeks earlier about how the Polamalus could help the furloughed workers. The first thought was to give out grocery store gift cards but then when the idea and the benefits of helping others struggling with the pandemic were realized, the local restaurant cards became the gifts of choice.
Per the Post-Gazette report each family should start seeing a $25 gift card in their mailbox sometime the week of 4/21/20.
The story tells that Troy Polamalu’s connection to the County was for the 12 pre-seasons training camps as a Steeler that were spent in the City of Latrobe, PA each summer. The former stalwart felt a connection to the people of the county and it was this bond that summoned him and his wife to send the help. County officials pointed out that Mr Polamalu and family since his retirement do not live in the area any longer making the bond even more special.
What an awesome message and even greater act of kindness that this football family has done to share their own good fortune with those in need during this world wide crisis. Mr. and Mrs Ploamalu you are making new fans for your actions off of the football field.
