Clemson Star Lends a Hand
March 28, 2020 Clemson Quarterback, Trevor Lawrence and his girlfriend, women’s soccer player Marissa Mowry may be college students but their hearts have already graduated to the next level. Reports say that the couple started a GoFundMe page for COVID-19 victims. According to CBS Sports, the fund is managed by Cartersville-Bartow Community Foundation, and was put in place to help families in South Carolina and Georgia that were financially impacted by the recent coronavirus outbreak.
Early reports said that the couple’s efforts were shut down by the NCAA but the NCAA issued a statement on March 24, 2020denying that it asked the couple to shut the page down.
In a quote on a recent article on CBSSports.com Lawrence states; "Marissa and I have created the Fund to help our friends and neighbors in the Cartersville and Upstate South Carolina communities deal with some of the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 situation," Lawrence said in a statement. "We hope others will join us in supporting the many families in need. These are challenging times, and no one should be left behind."
Lawrence was quoted later on Mowrey’s Instagram video; "Despite all of the craziness and drama with that, we were able to raise a little over $2,500. So all of that's going to go to Meals on Wheels and No Kid Hungry, which is super awesome," Lawrence said in the video, which will disappear after 24 hours. "Thank you guys, all of y'all that donated. It's really much appreciated. It's going to help some kids and some elderly [people] somewhere, so it's going to be very helpful. So we really appreciate y'all. Sorry for all of the drama and all of the confusion, but we got it worked out."
Hey that is still a lot of money from a couple of students who had all the right intentions. Unfortunately sometimes the rules and red tape get in the way of people trying to help others in need. Trevor and Marissa, there is no red tape bureaucracy here on this website. We celebrate you and all in our football family that are there to do great things for others.
If our readers are aware of anyone else associated with any level of American football that has done a great act of kindness, please let us know via email at PigskinDispatch@gmail.com and we will get one of the crack staff to get an article up to celebrate these good people of football.
