Football can trace its roots to the ancient past, some into the the years that end with B.C.! Come and join us in this four part series that dives into the ancestors of American football from across the pond and beyond.

The late 19th century America was experiencing the Industrial Revolution just after the country was recovering for Civil war. People were leaving the agricultural setting and gathering in cities like never before. One of the effects of putting people together is shared activities, and in this case sports and football became just that. Join us in this portion of our look back at the history of football as we see how America absorbed the old games from Europe and made them into something uniquely American.

The 1890's saw the strategies of coaches develop into trying to out muscle and literally beat down an opponent to reach victory. The game was brutal to the point of deaths and serious injuries were occurring. Read the articles in Volume 3 to see what was almost football's demise.
