" The Philadelphia Eagles Soar"

Last updated 📅 2025-04-28

The 1948 NFL season was a notable year in the league's history, marked by several significant events and culminating in a memorable championship game. One of the rule changes that year prohibited the use of plastic helmets, reflecting concerns about player safety. Off the field, there were changes in team ownership, with Fred Mandel selling the Detroit Lions to a new syndicate, and Art Rooney selling the Pittsburgh franchise before buying a stake in the Philadelphia Eagles. A significant innovation was introduced by Fred Gehrke of the Los Angeles Rams, who painted horns on the team's helmets, marking the first modern helmet emblem in professional football.

The season also saw impressive individual performances. Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins showcased his versatility by leading the league in passing, punting, and interceptions. Steve Van Buren of the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the rushing category, leading the NFL in rushing, kickoff returns, and scoring. Bill Dudley of the Pittsburgh Steelers also had a remarkable season, leading in rushing, interceptions, and punt returns, and earning the league's Most Valuable Player award. Tragedy struck the Chicago Cardinals with the death of owner Charles Bidwill, Sr., though his family retained ownership of the team.

The 1948 NFL Championship Game, played on December 19th, is particularly memorable. It pitted the Philadelphia Eagles against the Chicago Cardinals at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. The game was played in a blizzard, with heavy snow and challenging conditions significantly impacting gameplay. Despite the adverse weather, the Eagles managed to secure a 7-0 victory, with Steve Van Buren scoring the game's only touchdown. This game was also notable as the first NFL Championship Game to be televised, marking a significant step in the league's growth and popularity. The Eagles' victory in this "Blizzard Bowl" earned them their first NFL Championship since 1926.
