Michigan Football Program & Ticket Guide
Author and Collector Ken Magee tells history of football through U of Michigan ticket stubs and programsKen Magee Michigan Football Super Collector
We had the great privilage of having collector and author Ken Magee visited the Pigpen recently to discuss his upcoming book, The Michigan Football Programs and Ticket Guide. Ken you see has the largest collection of University of Michigan Football memorabilia in all the land. He has been collecting for decades, as he grew up in Ann Arbor and was great friends since childhood with the family of Coach Bo Schembechler. You see Maize and Blue are in his blood and this passion spurned him to want to own pieces of the program's history, so as he could he added, and added and added until his collection was enormous.
Ken has learned so much of not only Michigan Wolverines football lore through his collection but also of the very game itself. He wants to share the legacy of these pieces of history with the world so with co-author Brian Snider and a team of others they have assembled and over 600 page book of some 2500 images depicting a collection of Michigan Football history in ticket stubs and game programs and scorecards. He has also solicited the help of some of the finest football historians specializing in Wolverines football to write up some short pieces about each image group to write a legacy of University of Michigan Gridiron history.
Ken during our interview found above in the podcast, shared with me three very special pieces of his collection that are in the book.
- An 1881 scorecard from the Michigan at Yale game (A "Western" team competes with one of the top teams team of the stocking cap era)
- An 1898 Michigan versus Chicago ticket stub (Michigan upsets Amos Alonzo Stagg's midwest powerhouse team)
- A 1902 Tournament of Roses game Ticket , Michigan versus Stanford (The 1st Rose Bowl game in essence)
The book is beautiful as you can see from the photos here.
