In this episode, we are diving into the hidden rules of the NFL that most fans have no clue aboutโlet’s see if I can uncover them all!
The NFL is a game of inches, and while fans are familiar with the basics, lesser-known rules can significantly impact game outcomes. These are the kinds of regulations that even seasoned fans might not be aware of, and they can change the way we think about the game.
Here are five you might not be aware of.
1) One rule that often surprises fans is the fair catch rule. When a player fair catches a punt, they’re protected from being hit by the opposing team. But did you know that the receiving team after a fair catch has the right to try a field goal attempt free from any defenders trying to block it?
2) A Horse-collar foul protects runners being tackled by defenders grabbing inside the collars of their jersey, but did you know that it is also a horse-collar foul if the defender holds the runner’s name plate on the back of their jersey.
3) It is a facemask when an opponent gets hold of the cage portion of the helmet, but it also applies to any helmet opening being tugged, including the ear holes.
4) Goal posts were on the goal line from the 1930s through the early 1970s.
5) The defense can score on an extra point play. Two points are awarded for a scoop and score or pick-six on the XPA.
So there you have it – a few of the secret NFL rules that can change the game. Knowing these rules can add a new layer of enjoyment to watching the game and help fans appreciate the sport’s complexities.
