After a volatile Week 7 in College football, with multiple top teams falling, it is hard to tell who the cream-of-the-crop contenders are and who the pretenders are. This week has brought a Week 7 CFB Power Rankings Shakeup, with changes among the top ten teams. We’ll try to sort it out by providing a mid-season power ranking of the FBS top ten teams. This analysis will inform our College Football Week 7 Power Rankings and set the tone for debate.
We will apply a balancing weight by judging all teams against one another on a neutral field under optimal weather conditions, reflecting the methodology for these College Football Week 7 Power Rankings.
1. Miami Hurricanes (6-0):

Sitting at 6β0, Miami boasts one of the country’s most explosive offenses and holds consensus AP #1 status. They belong in the top two or three of any metric. Florida State took them to double OT last week, and this week the Canes host Pitt. We will find out how good they are as they then have back-to-back travel games at North Carolina and Notre Dame.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1):

Okay, they lost in Week 1 to a (then top-five) Texas squad in Texas. Going into Bloomington and edging Indiana 19β15 in a physical fistfight proved their championship-caliber trench play and situational defense. With QB Julian Sayin healing for a few weeks, this might get interesting, but once he returns, I think they’re a handful on a neutral field against anyone. Week 8 is a scheduled bye week, and in Week 9 Coach Ryan Day’s team traveled to play #16 USC. If Sayin is out for the year, this team may tumble.
3. BYU Cougars (7-0):

BYU out-slugged the Irish 28β24 in Provo behind Bear Bachmeier’s three-touchdown performance.
4. Notre Dame (6-1):

They just lost a controversial heartbreaker in Provo to the BYU Cougars; however, on a neutral field, this talent-laden team is dangerous, and their solid coaching lets them go toe-to-toe with anyone.
5. Georgia (6-1):

It was a tough rivalry loss last Saturday, but Georgia remains perhaps the most physically imposing one-loss roster in the country.
6. Indiana (6-1):

The defending champs lost to rival Ohio State. They are well coached and have talent across the board.
7. Tennessee Volunteers (5β1):

Fresh off a dominant 26β10 beatdown of Alabama in Knoxville. Their front seven suffocated the Tide’s run game, giving them a resume and eye test superior to most fringe top-10 teams.
8. UCLA (6-0):

The Bruins are 6β0 and playing sharp, mistake-free football under Bob Chesney. Putting them ahead of a one-loss Ole Miss squad rewards their perfect record, though their schedule toughness escalates from here with conference games.
9. Ole Miss (5-1):

Fair placement? The Rebels made a statement by dismantling Missouri 31β3, re-establishing their top-tier SEC credentials after earlier stumbles. Their next two games are against ranked conference opponents, though, so stay tuned.
10. Texas Tech Red Raiders (6β0):

Unbeaten and controlling their destiny in the Big 12. While Kentucky (6β1) has a case after storming back to beat Oklahoma 21β13 in Norman, Texas Tech’s unblemished record gives them the edge for the final spot in these College Football Week 7 Power Rankings.
Honorable mention: Texas, Kentucky, USC
