September 11, 1916 – Blairstown, NJ – Ed Sabol, videographer and historian, was born.
Sabol changed how we watched professional football and, in doing so, took the NFL’s popularity to new heights.
Sabol founded what we now call NFL Films as a standalone filming company, Blair Moon Pictures, in 1962.
The film company’s first gig was the 1962 NFL Championship Game at Yankee Stadium, where the Giants hosted the Packers.
It was a match made in heaven as the League was finding its footing in American living rooms on television while it battled the American Football League, and Blair Moon had a steady client.
In 1964, the NFL absorbed Blair Moon Pictures and renamed it NFL Films.
Ed, along with his son Steve and a team of professionals, changed the way we watch football games and brought drama, nostalgia, and the personalities of the players and teams in the National Football League.
Ed Sabol elevated professional football from a simple athletic contest to an ingrained American tradition, leaving an unparalleled visual legacy that still defines sports media today.
