August 31, 1906 – Bill Spears, the former Vanderbilt University Commodore quarterback who played from 1925 through 1927, was born.
His nickname was Bounding Bill Spears. What a nickname that is.
The speedster threw very few interceptions. Some said he would have been a shoo-in to win the Heisman Trophy if the award had existed in 1927.
