Morten Andersen kicks his way into the record books as one of the greatest placekickers in NFL history.
Football Bio
August 19, 1960 – Morten Andersen was a Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker, most notably for the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints in the NFL.
The Danish-American kicker had a remarkable 26-year NFL career. He attended Michigan State University before his NFL career.
During his career, Anderson booted 565 field goals through the uprights in 709 attempts, maintaining a lofty 98.8% accuracy, and made 849 extra points in 859 attempts.
Morton is one of only three kickers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who did not play any other position. The others were Jan Stenerud and Ray Guy. You know, some good company to be in there.
Of course, we had, you know, we just mentioned the other day in our football by numbers, you know, Lou the Toe Groza, but he played some other positions. Same with George Blanda, who we’ve talked about before. He played some other positions on the field, and a few others did some kicking.
I believe Paul Hornung, the great running back of the Green Bay Packers, did some kicking for them, as well as some others throughout history. Kicking was, you know, just a luxury, so you’d have one of the best guys on your team who could kick, and sometimes that was your star player, like in Hornung’s case or, you know, George Blanda.
Morten Andersen cements his legacy as a legendary specialist who proved that a pure kicker can dominate the NFL and earn a rightful place in Canton.
