Ken Riley was born on August 6, 1947, in Bartow, Florida.

College Career

Before establishing himself in professional football, Riley attended Florida A&M University (FAMU), where he starred as a standout quarterback under legendary head coach Jake Gaither. Riley guided the FAMU Rattlers to a 23–7 record and three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championships. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Riley was an exemplary student-athlete, earning his team’s scholastic award and receiving a nomination as a Rhodes Scholar candidate.

Road to the Pro Game

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Riley in the sixth round (135th overall) of the 1969 AFL-NFL Draft. Although he played quarterback throughout high school and college, Bengals head coach Paul Brown immediately transitioned Riley to cornerback. Adapting swiftly to defense, Riley secured a starting position as a rookie in 1969, recording four interceptions in his inaugural campaign. Football Legacy

Despite playing quietly in a smaller media market without widespread national fanfare during his playing days, Riley became one of the most reliable pass defenders in football history. Over 207 regular-season games, his consistency and tactical intelligence anchored Cincinnati’s defensive unit through the 1970s and early 1980s, culminating in an appearance in Super Bowl XVI. After retiring, he returned to Florida A&M to serve as head football coach (1986–1993) and athletic director (1994–2003), winning two MEAC titles. Four decades after his retirement, his decades-long excellence was formally cemented with selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
