At North Carolina State, he played as a defender and spent a brief time as a pro. Cowher became known for his sideline success after retirement. At 34, he replaced Chuck Noll as Pittsburgh Steelers coach, keeping the team competitive for 15 years. He played linebacker for the Browns and Eagles from 1980 to 1984 (Steelers.com).
