Utah State Aggies Football History

The Utah State Aggies football program began in 1892 and has played home games at Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium since 1968. They have won thirteen conference championships in four different conferences during their history, most recently in 2021. The Aggies experienced their first period of success in the early 1900s, winning four conference championships in nine years. They also made their first bowl appearance in 1918, losing to the Montana State Bobcats in the Shrine Potato Bowl. The Aggies struggled in the middle of the 20th century, but they experienced a resurgence in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They won two conference championships in that time period and made their first appearance in the Sun Bowl in 1960. The Aggies continued to have success in the 1970s and 1980s. They won four conference championships in that time period and made five bowl appearances. The most notable of those bowl appearances was a victory over the Ball State Cardinals in the 1978 California Bowl. After a couple of lean decades, the Aggies experienced a renaissance under head coach Gary Andersen, who replaced Brent Guy following the 2008 season. The 2011 campaign was the team's first winning season in many years, resulting in a postseason bowl berth. 2012 has brought the school's first-ever 10-win season WAC championship (its first outright conference championship since 1936) and national Top 25 rankings in all three major polls. Multiple former players went on to have success in the NFL after leaving Utah State, including the legendary brothers and consensus All-Americans Merlin Olsen and Phil Olsen, Chris Cooley, Eric Hipple, Rulon Jones, Emmett White, and many more.
