The New Mexico State Aggies football program began in 1893. The Aggies have played in various conferences over the years, including the Border Conference, the Missouri Valley Conference, the Big West Conference, and the Sun Belt Conference. They are currently members of Conference USA.
The Aggies have won four conference championships in their history: in 1976 (shared with Tulsa), 1978, 2002, and 2017. They have also played in five bowl games, winning four of them.
The Aggies' most successful era came under the leadership of head coach Warren B. Woodson, who led the team from 1953 to 1967. Woodson is the winningest coach in school history, with 91 wins. He led the Aggies to their first conference championship in 1959 and to their first bowl game in 1960.
Some of the most notable Aggies players from the Woodson era include Bob Gaiters, Jerry Tarkanian, and Bobby Humphery, Jason Huntley, Bobby Jackson, and Joey Jackson. . Gaiters went on to have a successful career in the NFL, winning Super Bowl IV with the Kansas City Chiefs. Tarkanian became one of the most successful college basketball coaches of all time, leading UNLV to two national championships. Beamon was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 1965 NFL Draft and played for five seasons in the NFL. Humphery was a former DB with the New York Jets. Huntley is a 2020 draft pick RB with the Detroit Lions. Bobby Jackson played FB for the St. Louis Cardinals in the early 1960s. DT Joey Jackson was with the New York Jets during the early 1970s.
