You know it's a good game when they erect a statue of a play from it! Folks knew it would be a classic showdown when #10 Boston College traveled to play #12 Miami on November 23, 1984. With their standout QB Doug Flutie, BC moved around in the pocket all day, tiring a very aggressive Miami defense. It was when Number 22 scrambled to his right, with time running out, and then launched a 48-yard desperation pass into the end zone with zeroes on the clock and receiver Gerard Phelan, plopped just behind a scrum of defenders, caught the ball like it was a punt. CBS announcer Brent Musburger screamed, "I don't believe it!" into his microphone. It was a fantastic finish, one of the most memorable in collegiate football history! The victory propelled the Eagles into the Cotton Bowl, and this play may have sealed the deal of Flutie winning the 1984 Heisman—final score: Boston College 47, Miami 45. ESPN in 2019 ranked it as the 4th Greatest College Game ever.
