1973 Tiebreaker Controversy - OSU vs. Michigan

The November 24, 1973, Ohio State -Michigan game was in the midst of the "10-year War." The Buckeyes were ranked Number 1 in the nation under Woody Hayes, while the Wolverines of Bo Schembechler were ranked Number 4. Both teams came in undefeated and had not had anyone even play a close game with them so far. That would change on this day. OSU took an early 10-0 lead in the second stanza. Head coach Woody Hayes stuck to his pound-the-ball offensive scheme even as the Wolverines dropped nine in the box. The See-saw battle saw the Wolverines tie the score in the fourth quarter; Michigan's Mike Lantry missed a couple of field goal attempts of 58 and 44 yards in the final 1:01. The Big Ten Conference athletic directors made the decision via a vote to send Hayes' Ohio State Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl, and Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler never forgave them. The mysterious tie-breaking system would change the Big Ten forever and be in the ire of Michigan fans to this day. Final score 10-10. In 2019, ESPN ranked it as the 92nd Greatest College Game ever.
