The Story on Bootleg Footballs

Bootleg footballs were a part of the game almost 100 years ago. They were balls produced and used in games not authorized by the NCAA. The story of these bogus balls is a fascinating glance back into gridiron history. We are so glad that author and historian Timothy P. Brown has joined us to tell the tale of these pirated pigskins and glimpse at an era in football history gone by and how it changed the rules.

Bootleg Footballs and Changing Specifications

We are all familiar with \"bootlegs\" in football, which entered the game with Pop Warner’s 1927 Stanford team when they ran what appeared to be a Statue of Liberty play to the left. Instead, the double-wing fullback faked the give, concealed the ball on his hip, and ran around the right end for a touchdown. — www.footballarchaeology.com
