November 25, 1971 #1 Huskers vs #2 Sooners

Billed as the \"Game of the Century\", the contest more than lived up to its hype, with No. 1 Nebraska Norman with a 35-31 win over the No. 2 Sooners. — www.youtube.com

On a frigid Thanksgiving Day in 1971, the college football world bore witness to a clash of titans. The top-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, riding a 29-game unbeaten streak, traveled to Norman, Oklahoma, to face the second-ranked Sooners. This highly anticipated matchup, dubbed the "Game of the Century," lived up to its billing.

The game pitted two offensive juggernauts against each other. Nebraska's formidable defense, anchored by All-Americans like Larry Jacobson and Rich Glover, was tasked with containing Oklahoma's potent wishbone offense led by the dynamic quarterback Jack Mildren. The Sooners, known for their explosive plays, challenged the Huskers' stout defense, while Nebraska's methodical ground game kept the pressure on Oklahoma.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with multiple lead changes. Johnny Rodgers electrified the crowd with a dazzling 72-yard punt return for a touchdown. However, it was Nebraska's fullback, Jeff Kinney, who emerged as the hero, scoring four crucial touchdowns to seal the 35-31 victory for the Cornhuskers. This thrilling contest, filled with high-stakes drama and unforgettable moments, is widely regarded as one of the greatest college football games ever played.
