Born January 14, 1908, in Macon, Georgia, Vernon Smith, a legendary end for the Georgia Bulldogs, had it all going on. Many who knew him called him "Catfish." as he was a colorful character in the Peach State. Catfish Smith's gridiron persona grew when he garnered national attention in 1929. The Bulldogs christened Sanford Stadium in a big game against the visiting national powerhouse, Yale Bulldogs. Catfish scored all the contest's points in a 15-0 upset of national power Yale. He was an All-America selection in 1931, according to the NFF. The National Football Foundation's voting group inducted Vernon Smith into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
