The Memphis Tigers football program began play in 1903 and has competed in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) since 2013. The Tigers have an all-time record of 471-518-36, and have won 12 conference championships.
The Tigers' most successful era came under head coach Tiger Shaw, who led the team from 1993 to 2004. During his tenure, Shaw led the Tigers to a 103-53 record, including six conference championships and five bowl victories. Shaw also coached the Tigers to their first-ever top-25 national ranking in 1996.
Other notable Memphis football coaches include Billy Jolley (who led the Tigers to two conference championships from 1968 to 1970) and Tommy West (who led the Tigers to three conference championships from 1990 to 1992).
The Tigers have had several notable players over the years, including:
- DeAngelo Williams (two-time Pro Bowler Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh Steelers)
- Darrell Henderson (former second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams)
- Kenneth Gainwell (former third-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles)
