The Florida International Panthers football program began in 2002 as a member of NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS). The team played its first game on August 29, 2002, against Saint Peter's College, and won 27-3. The Panthers finished their inaugural season with a record of 5-6.
In 2005, the Panthers moved up to NCAA Division I FBS (now FBS) and joined the Sun Belt Conference. The team's first season in FBS was a successful one, as they finished with a record of 7-5 and won the Sun Belt Conference championship. The Panthers also played in their first bowl game, the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, where they lost to Toledo 24-21.
The Panthers have had mixed success since moving to FBS. They have won the Sun Belt Conference championship once (2010) and have played in three bowl games. However, they have also had some losing seasons, including a 1-11 record in 2013.
The Panthers are currently coached by Butch Davis, who was hired in 2022. Davis is a former head coach at the University of Miami and the University of North Carolina. He is known for his aggressive style of play and his ability to recruit top talent.
The Panthers play their home games at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 people.
