The Boise State Broncos football program began 1933 as a junior college team. The Broncos moved to four-year status in 1968 and joined the NCAA Division II Big Sky Conference in 1970. Under head coach Tony Knap, the Broncos won three consecutive Big Sky titles from 1973 to 1975.
In 1978, the Big Sky moved to Division I-AA. Boise State succeeded in the new division, winning the conference championship in 1984 and 1985. In 1996, the Broncos moved to Division I-A (now FBS).
Boise State has had great success in FBS, winning three Fiesta Bowls (2006, 2009, and 2014). The Broncos have also been ranked in the AP Top 25 poll 17 times, including a peak ranking of #3 in 2006.
Boise State is known for its blue turf, installed in 1986. The Broncos play their home games at Albertsons Stadium, which has a capacity of 40,000.
