Cal Hubbard

Born October 31, 1900, in Keytesville, Missouri, Cal Hubbard was a tackle for Centenary and Geneva Colleges. The NFF informs us that Cal Hubbard played end and tackle for Centenary 1922-24 and then moved with his coach, Bo McMillin to play one season at Geneva College 1926. Later as a pro, Hubbard was a big tackle, standing 6-4 in height and weighing 250 pounds, for the New York Giants, Green Bay, and Pittsburgh franchises. The College Football Hall of Fame added Cal to their lineup in 1962. The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined Cal Hubbard one year later, in 1963 for back-to-back Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremonies! Believe it or not 13 years after that in 1976, Cal Hubbard was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as an umpire. Cal Hubbard was an American professional football player and Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire. After playing college football at Centenary College and Geneva College, Hubbard played in the National Football League (NFL) between 1927 and 1936 for the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Pirates, playing the bulk of his career with the Packers. Hubbard is one of the inventors of the football position of linebacker. He was named the Outland Trophy winner in 1926 awarded to the best college football player in the country. The New York Giants drafted Hubbard in the first round of the 1927 NFL Draft. He played for the Giants for two seasons before being traded to the Green Bay Packers in 1929. Hubbard played for the Packers for five seasons, and he was a key member of the Packers' first three NFL championship teams. In 1936, Hubbard retired from football to become an umpire in Major League Baseball. Hubbard umpired in the American League for 22 seasons, from 1936 to 1957. He was known for his fairness and his ability to control the game. He was also known for his physical presence, and he was not afraid to stand up to players who argued with him. Hubbard was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
